The Peter Lindbergh Retrospective at Kunsthal Rotterdam

Watch Peter Lindbergh's short film The Reunion, bringing 90s supermodels back together.
See more about this film here.

Last week, all Instagrammers who follow 90s-era models like Cindy Crawford and Tatjana Patitz saw photos from the opening of a stunning exhibition of photographer Peter Lindbergh's work.  Peter Lindbergh: A Different Vision on Fashion Photography at Kunsthal Rotterdam features a retrospective of over 220 black and white photographs that have defined the course of fashion photography since the early '80s...

Even if you aren't familiar with Lindbergh, you know his photographs.  His iconic shoot for British Vogue basically created the era of supermodels, and launched the careers of Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford and Tatjana Patitz.

Lindbergh is one of my favorite photographers not only for the gritty, film-inspired artistry of his images, but because he captures the human body with all its glorious imperfections.  He recently said:

"This should be the responsibility of photographers today: to free women and finally everyone, from the terror of youth and perfection."

(Read more of Lindbergh's attitude about artificial perfection and models here.)

Basically, whenever you shoot a high contrast #nofilter selfie in natural light, you're honoring the aesthetic of Peter Lindbergh.  We need more like him in the fashion industry, and we need think more like him when we reach for the blur filter on our phones.

Most of us are unable to travel to the Netherlands to see the exhibition, but TASCHEN has published a monograph curated by Thierry-Maxime Loriot and designed by the award winning Montreal-based graphic design firm Paprika.  This is a must-have coffee table book anyone who loves photography and fashion history.

The exhibition runs until February 12, 2017.

Me: no blur filter, undereye circles & smudged mascara. Thanks for the inspiration, Peter Lindbergh!
